10 Days Until The Mayan End Date....Where is the Chaos?

The countdown clock says 10 Days and counting until 12-21-12.  Where is the chaos & panic, I and many others expected?  WWIII could be unleashed at anytime in Syria, 7.0+ Earthquakes are happening, storms, & unusual weather. Yet, no one seems to connect the dots!

There was much more unrest about Y2K!  Three or four days before, you couldn't find batteries or flashlights in Detroit!  I hesitated to prep until then, alas, had to drive to multiple stores to get basic stuff!

Less than two weeks...I have not came across any stories about "panic" buying, etc.  Of course no one prepared for Sandy either and look what happened.  I guess 98% of folks are optimists and non-believers in the need to prep.  I guess FEMA will save them like they did after Katrina and Sandy.  Uh huh.

The Folly of Not Prepping...Hurricane Sandy!

Days before Hurricane Sandy struck the NE coast of the USA The Weather Channel and major News Stations were calling for citizens to fill their cars with gas, stock foods, medicines, and emergency supplies!  FEMA claimed emergency supplies were prepositioned in advance (?)... and yet 5 days after the storm, chaos reigns in many areas.  Folks are hungry, cold and angry with government!

Wait...what happened to personal responsibility? Why on earth after Katrina, would anyone think the government or FEMA would save them?

Since 9/11, The Red Cross, FEMA, and Homeland Security have had on their web sites what you need as a "72 Hour Kit"...dozens of places sell them online!  There really is no excuse for not having a "Kit".  It's Survival Insurance, just like life, car, and home owner Insurance!

This is not the first disaster in that area....it will not be the last.  I can't think of any excuse for not being prepared....none at all!

Lawlessness After SHTF!

As in my previous definition of what I mean by "SHTF"....there maybe a world without laws or a moral compass!

I've spoken to ex-members of gangs like Bloods & Crips....they are stockpiling stuff too! Some have plans to liberate prisoners from jails & prisons! Mongols & Hell's Angels type gangs will be roaming & pillaging the countryside! Inner city hoodlums unrestrained by limited or missing police will also be looting & worse!

Many states have Militias...with well armed membership...they too maybe roaming the countryside! And least we forget the Government may impound all food supplies & weapons under Martial Law!

All these folks will be out hunting for "your stuff"! Have your retreat or bunker as low profile as possible! Camaflauge or looking abandoned is good! Don't a have a huge splashy home with a dozens of windows & lights...this screams "Rob me!" Don't have yard lights or bon fires, loudspeakers, etc!

Just as SHTF will kill off 50% of good folks it will get an equal amount of "dirtbag scum"!

Alternatives to a Survival Retreat!

*Note of Clarification!  When I use the term SHTF, I am speaking of a civilization killing, global catastrophe like Nuclear War, Global Economic Collapse, Global Pandemic, etc.  I am talking about a Global Death Rate of 50%, up to 90% in Major cities...this is permanent  catastrophe!  I caution anyone not to kill innocent people, retain your moral compass, help others in need, & respect occupied private property!

Many people want to #Prep, but not everyone can afford remote land, an underground bunker, or a years supply of stored food!  You still want you and your family to survive, and your moral compass eliminates robbing, killing, or taking what you need from others.  What can you do?

I have a few ideas, because I am in that boat myself!  I don't believe enough time is left to save up and buy 100% of what I need.  I have ideas and a "Bug Out Bag"!

1.  National Parks, National Forest, State Parks and State Forests.  These are "Public Lands", as citizens we own them....many are in wilderness, remote areas, BLM land, unlikely to be over-run by refugees from major cities (most of whom will unfortunately be dead).  There are most likely some in every state, but most obviously are in the Western US.  Find an area you can get to in a reasonable time, check it out in advance, get topo maps, etc.  You can even bury some supplies discreetly in advance!  Some areas contain caves, which make an impromptu Nuclear Fallout Shelter.

2. Commercial Buildings.  Banks, universities, science related companies. Oh my, your "trespassing"....folks, when SHTF for real no one is going to worry about that crap.  I'm talking you and your families survival. Banks have vaults, and heavy duty basements construction.  Most major universities have science and microbiology class rooms and laboratories. These are also built with better construction HVAC, security doors, deep basements, etc.  Throughout the country are companies that build all types of heavy duty equipment, computer clean rooms, scientific materials, etc.  In Texas there is a mothballed "Supper Collider" deep underground, with room for 100's!

3. Mines.  Throughout the United States are mines..coal mines, salt mines, gold mines...some active, some abandoned.  These need to be checkout in advance.  Actually buying abandoned mining claims can get cheap land and a mine (bunker).  Salt mines are historically very geologically stable.  There is one under Detroit!

I don't want to give-away-the-farm here, but by now I think you get the idea!  Most of these ideas and some of your own can be checked out in advance, which I recommend. Alternative routes, distance and time to arrive are important considerations.  While I am writing this, it brought to mind a great 1950's movie that is relevant..."Panic in the Year Zero"...its a good "what if" flic.

Are You Prepared to "Liberate" Supplies from Abandoned Stores, Factories, & Railcars in Order to Survive?

*Note of Clarification!  When I use the term SHTF, I am speaking of a civilization killing, global catastrophe like Nuclear War, Global Economic Collapse, Global Pandemic, etc.  I am talking about a Global Death Rate of 50%, up to 90% in Major cities...this is permanent  catastrophe!  I caution anyone not to kill innocent people, retain your moral compass, help others in need, & respect occupied private property!

Like the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina....your supplies, home, & future maybe destroyed or in jeopardy! FEMA can't or won't help you due to ineptness or the scale of the destruction.  Earthquakes, endless draught, EMP attack, or war can create chaos as severe or worse than Katrina's floods.  What alternative do you have to survive than "Liberate", boost, loot & steal from destroyed stores, homes, or crashed trucks and rail cars?

Don't start screaming moral judgements, we're talking your survival or your families here.  I'm also not speaking of stealing, robbing or killing from other folks trying to survive!  I'm speaking of taking supplies from insured entities with no one guarding them, foods that will likely perish in a few days if left to rot!  I'm a pretty moral guy...I don't see this as stealing, but surviving! Each will be making their own decisions, but if a crashed truck full of bottle water and fresh fruit crashed in front of your staving family....survival instincts will override moral hesitation.  If you still feel guilty, leave an IOU!

Top 10 Reasons Why The Future of America Depends on Survivalists & Preppers

Reprint Article by David Morris

There has been a lot of derogatory talk lately about “preppers” and “survivalists” and I’d like to take a minute to point out 10 reasons why preppers and survivalists have always been vital to the United States and why it is essential that we have as many as possible to survive future disasters.
1.  FEMA–The cost for local, state, and federal agencies to plan, equip, and staff for EVERY disaster that might happen is cost prohibitive.  When disasters strike, government is quick to talk, quick to “ramp up”, but government help is slow to come and inefficient when it arrives.
Survivalists and preppers on the other hand are able to act quickly and efficiently to take care of their own house and provide stability, structure, and assistance for their streets, neighborhoods, and beyond.
2.  Stable Base–An organization (or nation) of people with specialized skills may accomplish great things when everything is going smoothly, but it quickly fall apart when trouble comes.  The survivalist & prepper mindset of “Jack of all trades, master of ONE” makes for a stable organization (or nation).
3.  Joseph in the Bible–Preppers/survivalists have been around saving the day since the beginning of time.  In Genesis 37-50, Joseph sees trouble coming and prepares for seven years.  At the end of seven years, a severe drought/famine hits that lasts for the next seven years.  Because of Joseph’s preparations, Egypt survived the drought/famine and was able to help the surrounding nations.
4.  Founding Fathers–With the Constitution and Bill of Rights, our founding fathers pushed responsibility from the federal government down to the individual citizen and promoted a survivalist/prepper.  They did it with the 2nd and 4th amendments, they did it by example (Washington leading a mostly barefoot army across the Delaware,) and they did it throughout their writing, “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.  Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote.”  –Ben Franklin
5.  Siege warfare–Many of the things that happened after Katrina are textbook examples of why siege warfare is so effective.  The normal city has a 3 day supply of food.  The normal prepper has a 6-24 MONTH supply of food.
Which do you think is more stable in the event of a siege that is due to disasters or war?  If you ONLY focus on food and water supplies, a city/county/region/country with many preppers will be much more resilient to being cut off from outside help than one with few preppers.
6.  Independent from the government–How much leverage does an energy tax (or most other taxes) have on a family who’s living off the grid?  The more self-reliant you are, the less control the government can exert over your life through taxes.
7.  Criminals fear the aware and prepared–This is fairly straight forward.  Preppers & survivalists gradually become more aware and prepared than the average person.  This will show itself in your walk, in your eyes, and how you carry yourself.  In short, you stop looking like a wounded gazelle and more like a badger…cute & cuddly, but ready to do anything necessary to stop a threat to him/herself or loved ones.
8.  Tyrants fear survivalists and preppers–In addition to living a lifestyle that insulates them from siege, some taxes, and being nannied, survivalists and preppers are usually well armed & seek advanced training.  Good men have nothing to fear from an armed populace, but tyrants who seek to control the lives of others will always try to disarm them first through confiscation, taxation, or pressure through media and the educational system.
It worked for Hitler, Mao, and many more narcissistic, mass murders suffering from munchausen by proxy throughout the ages.  So far back, in fact, that Aristotle spoke extensively about how, in any society, those who control the arms control the state.
9.  More preppers = fewer refugees & faster recovery from disasters—After a local, regional, or national disaster, the number of refugees will be inversely proportional to the number of preppers & survivalists in the area.  In other words, the more preppers you have in an area, the less strain the hospitals, volunteer organizations, and government run refugee centers will have.
10.  More able to help their fellow man—After a disaster, you’re not going to see very many refugees donating their food/supplies/time.  It’s not that they don’t want to, but rather it’s because they are in a fight for their lives and may be dehydrated, hungry, and tired.
Preppers and survivalists who have food storage, water or water treatment tools, and who have prepared themselves psychologically for disasters will be able to help in several ways.  First, they’re less likely to become refugees or use the time/resources of first responders.  Second, since they ARE prepared for disasters, they can help the people in their immediate area which will lessen the load on first responders and reduce the number of refugees.  Third, by helping themselves and their neighbors, preppers will increase the quality of care for people who DO end up still needing first responder care or to relocate to a refugee center.
In short, the more survivalists and preppers that we have, the more stable our families, cities, and the country as a whole are.  If you believe in this message, please forward it to your friends and family, tweet it, and link to it from your website or Facebook page.

What if You Have to Bug Out on Foot?

I don't drive, nor have a car.  I live in a 184 Sq Mile city, Portland, OR.  Public transportation, if it runs can take me 20 miles East.  My safe zone is on the East side of the Cascade Mountains at least 150 miles away!  If an EMP or huge natural disaster hits this area, infrastructure is destroyed, public transportation, even cars, may not work.  How do you Bug Out?

I walk everyday about 3-5 miles, without gear.  At any pace, it would take days to walk 150 miles!  In the covered wagon era, they averaged 28 miles per day...that's 6 days to evacuate Portland!  If you had a mountain bike and it wasn't winter, you could probably cut that in half...but it's mostly uphill.

The more obvious answer is to get the hell out of a major city, in advance of trouble!  Gut reactions to events and increasing warnings may give you time, while things still work.  Better yet, don't live in any major city!  Cities will be Hell...remember Katrina and New Orleans...and that was after large numbers had already evacuated!

Exercise, walk a lot...with gear...get a good mountain bike...hope it's not winter!

Publicly Traded Firearms and Ammuntion Companies

Doing a little reseach, I've put together a list of publicly traded companies in the firearms business.  Many major manurfacturers and most ammo manufactureres are private companies (and closed to nosey public inspections).
The stock ticker symbols are:

SWHC - Smith & Wesson; TASR- Taser International; MTSX -  Metal Storm Ltd; GD - General Dynamics; OLN - Olin Manufacturing; ATK - Allient Techsystems; RGR - Ruge
I've set up a "Watch List" to check the progress of these companies.  Today, not so good. #Preppers and survivors should be interested in these stocks.  On a seperate note, I also have a "Watch List" of major Defense company stocks...they are down as well!

50,000 Evacuees from Fire...Where do you go?

Colorado Springs is burning....Mountain towns like Woodland Park are threatened. Where on earth do 50,000 people go?  Many will have no home to return to.  lots of apartments in Colorado Springs, but not that many vacancies! For many this will be long term...what on earth do you do?

Underground Living...A Home & A Bunker!

As a former Designer-Builder of Solar Homes & Structures, I always built above ground.  Looking forward, I can see many advantages in underground or Earth Sheltered designs, particularly as a #prepper.  For one to maintain safety for your family, you only need one structure....not two (home + bunker)!

Underground construction, back East in Upstate NY where I worked, cost a large percentage of constructions costs for water-proofing, due to snow and rain...and ground water.

Now remote land in the high desert or mountains, requires less waterproofing and more modern materials exist.

Depending on family size and how many you need to "shelter" will obviously determine your costs.  My current studio apartment is 12" 6" X 20' 6" (256 Sq Ft)  It has everything I need.  If built as a stand alone cabin in the woods, I'd add a loft for a bedroom, and a deck or porch.  Plenty big enough for one person.

Built as a cave home, or into a hillside, adding aluminum security shutters on exterior windows.  You have a secure area.  Easily under $100,000.

Forest Fire Survival

With record breaking Forest Fires in Colorado and New Mexico now burning, and people's retreats burned to the ground, Fire Survival is critical.  Your retreat has to survive as well as your family and critters!

Underground construction with concrete would seem ideal.  Above ground, build your cabin or retreat of materials that resist fire as much as possible...tile or metal roofs, concrete or stucco siding, & full log siding is relatively fire resistant.

Clear the area around your home for about 100 yards of flammable material (also creates clear field of fire). Keep grass and brush trimmed or choose plants that are fairly green most of the time (don't dry out).  Bury your propane tank if you have one, cover top with gravel, keep firewood away from your house (insect reason too).  Many states now require these items on all new construction...some states or counties require sprinkler systems on rural homes.

Building your cabin in the woods, surrounded by trees, with a wood shake roof are a thing of the past.  Are you #prepared for Fire Season?

Kudos to the brave men & women who help fight Wild Fires, risking their lives to protect people & property!  In 2006, my son and I took part in Wild Fire Training in Colorado Springs, CO.  It involved wearing a lead weighted 40 pound vest crammed with instruments, to measure vital signs, while walking 4 miles as fast as possible and climbing up an 18" step as many times as possible in 5 minutes! At age 57, I wasn't first, but I finished and wasn't last!  It was one of the most strenuous things I've ever done!

Learn to Use Hand Tools for Carpentry and Woodworking

I come from 3-4 generations of German carpenters and woodworkers.  I've build a boat, made furniture and designed and built energy efficient passive solar homes.  From the time I was a wee lad, working with my grandfather and uncle, I started out using hand tools to cut and shape wood.  Anything that can be done with modern power tools are just an extension of hand tools.

There is something tranquil about using hand tools though...it's quiet, doesn't create huge clouds of dust or the need for noisy dust collectors.  You use your body & mind together in a way a power tool just doesn't.

One aspect I'll briefly mention as a #Prepper...if there is an EMP...power tools will not work!

For the price of a professional table saw, $1,000+, you can buy quite a few quality hand tools.  Taken care of, hand tools last for generations....so do power tools, as my grandfather's & uncle's tools still exist with my cousin!

Hand tools are also far less dangerous for a beginner to learn woodworking with....I'd recommend anyone, young or adult, first learn to use hand tools.  It is better to have quality than quantity.  Tools are one of those things, you get what you pay for.  If you don't have a relative to teach you, get a good book form Amazon or even the library.  Several great catalogs exist for quality hand tools as well as places like Ace Hardware, Sears, or Home Depot.  Some stores even offer woodworking classes...a good idea!

Here are some good catalog links for hand tools.

Shelter for Critters?

Prepper's talk about various bunkers, earth sheltered homes, shelter in place, etc.  but what about your critters?

Lately I've been looking at "off the grid" options of living on a small scale....5-10 acres, in a remote, yet accessible area.  Possible critters would include a few goats, chickens, a bee hive, etc.  along with a nice veggie garden with perhaps a small green house.

Even if I have an underground bunker or earth sheltered home, living roof, etc...what about the critters if the SHTF?

An earth covered/sheltered barn is perhaps the answer!  In my example, one about 12' X 16' with self contained water & food supply for several days would probably suffice.  It wouldn't be that expensive to build and just may save your critters!

Here are some other ideas I've found:  Earth Sheltered Greenhouse

Let There Be Light!

Whether camping, prepping, or hiking, a good flashlight is a necessity.  I have several....a small Mag-Light on my fanny pack, and angled one with changeable colored lenses and a few other backups.  They all use "AA" batteries, of which I have extra, that I rotate the shelf life of.

So far I have resisted one of those "Kinetic" shaking flashlights...they just seem too noisy to me. but will probably get one anyway.  I'm pretty sure LED is a good idea, all mine have krypton bulbs (yeah I have extras).

They make Solar Powered flashlights and other solar lighting.  These would be excellent for your retreat or backup. My emergency radio has "AA" batteries, a crank charger & solar.  For $79, you can get one with a USB port to charge your electronics!  (Need a larger Solar Panel for that too).

Not sure if you need to protect flashlights or solar powered items from EMP...sounds logical to do so...but that's another subject.

I forgot about "Lightsticks"...I'd just get white, about 99 cents each.  Get at least a dozen!

When the SHTF, you do not want to be left in the dark!

Learn Tracking...a Hobby & Prepping!

Here is an idea that is both a great hobby, especially to get kids involved, and a good #prepping skill:  Tracking!  Learning the various animal tracks, see which way they went, and most exciting for kids...see the animal that made the tracks!

Many State Departments of Natural Resources have pamphlets on tracking to get started.  The Public Library and your local bookstore or Amazon (an affiliate of Total Survivor Dad) have books on tracking.

Go to a park, or nearby Nature Center to practice and introduce children to the outdoors.  It teaches kids to be quiet in the woods in order to see wild life and patience.  A nature center is not a playground, so keep screaming, running, & horseplay to a minimum...you won't see any wild life & it is really annoying to others!

The National WildLife Federations has the children's outdoor magazine "Ranger Rick", that is highly recommended to acquaint youngsters with critters. it will tell a story of a particular animal, their tracks and how the animal lives.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are also great organizations that have Merit Badges in Tracking.

Have fun learning tracking, teaching your kids about the outdoors and leaning a great #prepper skill!  It's #prepping because you may have to hunt to eat and tracking is an important aspect of hunting!

A Microwave as a Faraday Cage!

I was going to build a Faraday Cage from copper rods and copper screen, soldered together.  I also thought it would look cool, but also kinda pricey!

As I explained the concept of a Faraday Cage to a Liberal Geezer (thinks prepping is just crazy)...he suggested just using a Microwave!  It keeps radiation in, it should keep EMP out! Totally logical and in addition, my new Microwave is metal and has a grounded plug!  Uh huh.

I "Googled" this idea and sure enough other preppers though of the same thing.  One problem...it doesn't work!  I tested it this morning.  My Microwave is a 1000W metal cabinet.  I turned on my iTouch4 to do a Wi-Fi Speed Test and put it inside (No I didn't power-up the Microwave!).  Unfortunately the Wi-Fi signal still got through....although, the signal was reduced by 50%.  I'm sure the EMP signal would also get through and "goodbye" electronic gizmo's & their chargers!

Plan B...I am going to get an enclosed tin box....insulate the inside and try that in the Microwave.  I'll put an addendum to this post on results!

When SHTF Get Out of Urban Areas ASAP!

In many survival scenarios, the term "shelter in place" is used....in other words, stay where you are until rescue arrives!  Unfortunately under many "worst case scenarios", there will be no rescue!  Remember Hurricane Katrina?  Many died because they "sheltered in place" & were woefully unprepared for what happened!  Don't count on FEMA to rescue you!

As the above 2010 Census graphic shows, while many states are heavily urbanized, most states have rural areas!  State Parks, National & State forests belong to everyone...you won't be trespassing!

Urban areas with normal crime, will go ballistic when the SHTF...there are not enough police or firemen to cover any large urban area...another Katrina example.  Many of these First Responders have their own families...many may not even show up!  Hey, it's human nature!

Realize these extreme scenarios...after an EMP for example...no electricity, cars & public transportation will be useless, even backup generators will be fried.  Depending on time of day, roads will be blocked, Interstates clogged and useless.  Obviously the time to leave the urban area is before the bad stuff happens.

Let me give an example of "pre-planning".  In Michigan, it seems every Tom, Dick, & Harry has an up-north "Hunting Camp" in the woods.  Often multiple families will go together to buy 400-500 acres.  These camps will make an excellent rural survival compound and many are just for that purpose!  Just get to your refuge first, before the SHTF!

#Preppers will always talk about planning, that's what we do.  Plan your "escape" from a urban environment, have backup plans, various routes, destinations!  Don't be caught in the urban jungle!

Government Prepping?

TV shows like "Doomsday Preppers" and  "Doomsday Bunkers"...Blogs, web sites, explain lots of information on individuals prepping for the worst case scenarios, but what are Governments doing? Remember the asinine response from FEMA during Hurricane Katrina? Does anyone think FEMA will save them?

State and Local Governments are more likely to help, but if they even have a plan, do they have the supplies to deal with a widespread disaster?

Many have seen the movie "2012" where the astute governments of the major industrial countries get together and build huge, giant Arks....to save humanity!  No one really believes they can or have done that...do they?  I am 110% dubious! Has anyone ever been to a City Council Meeting or State Assembly where such preparations were even discussed?  I thought not.

I currently live in Oregon...they have an Emergency Response Office...click here!  Google your state and see what they are actually doing.  call them up and ask them if they have supplies stockpiled.  Remember all the Police in New Orleans who walked off the job when Katrina hit?  They have families too...many "First Responders" won't even show up!

Folks it's up to individuals to save themselves and their families.  Just like it has always been.
BE PREPARED!

Are There Bible Preppers?

Reading today's headlines, is like reading the Book Of Revelation.  Preppers seem to be getting ready for earthquakes, nuclear & biological war, vulcanism, tsunamis, pandemics, and many other natural and man made disasters.

What if anything are Preppers doing for biblical disasters?

Revelation: The Seven Seals

I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” 4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.
5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. (NIV)

These are the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse...."thy will be done".

Revelation: The Trumpets

6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.
7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.
8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.
12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
en God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.

Think on these words.  Do they sound familiar in light of recent news headlines?  Only the blind could not see that they do. "In the land of the blind, a one eyed man is King."

These are the words of God...Preppers keep in mind, Divine judgement in your preparations.  Be wise in preparing physically, but you should also prepare spiritually, for surely we are in the End Times!

Terrorism in America

OK, I admit it, I am a Terrorist/Survivalist junkie...........I have supplies, KI radiation pills, and think WWIII will happen soon. Here is another opinion!

By Ned Kalbfleish

The mechanics of terror work quite simply. First, execute the act(s) of terror. Then observe the secondary and tertiary effects. Execute additional acts when and where required. The wave of effects that follow the act will include, but not be limited to, increases in crime; adverse economic impact; joblessness; business closings; shortages; increased policing activities negatively affecting good citizens; a loss of faith in the abilities of protection agencies such as police, etc. Finally, the greater the scope and magnitude of the terror acts perpetrated, the greater the subsequent effects will be, and the longer they will last.

In Terror in America, many of the teams' missions do not really cause that much death or destruction. But the basic mechanics of terrorism, combined with the manner in which our society and culture function, do not require that each and every act of terrorism produce a high body count or a hefty dollar amount of damage.

After 9/11, which was perpetrated using commercial aircraft, immediate actions were taken to heavily secure airports and passenger planes. People were understandably afraid to fly for a while. When people did fly, they were subjected to the most intense searches and security scans of their lives. The bottom line is simply that when we saw people getting killed on commercial flights, we became afraid of flying – thus allowing the government to instigate humiliating, costly, time consuming search protocols. Terrorism creates fear. If we think that terrorism can only occur on air flights, we feel more in control and somewhat less threatened. After all, we can skip flying, if we choose, and not everyone flies anyway.

In the greater Los Angeles area, for example, there are tens of millions of people. If terrorists go to LA and kill fifty people everyday for a week, it makes an almost unnoticeable difference in the population. However, if those killings are ruthless and well directed, there are long-lasting, pernicious subsequent effects. When school children enjoying recess on the playground are shot by snipers, parents will become reluctant to allow their children to go to school. Add killings in hospitals, malls, convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, discount stores, and so forth, and nobody wants to go out – anywhere!

As the mechanics of terrorism engage, the people of LA will stop going out. Restaurants will lose money, as will gas stations, retail operations and so on. Within days, the economy is adversely affected. Soon after that, jobs disappear and crime elevates.

Every major city in America has an example of a form of terrorism. In those examples, we can see the nefarious mechanics of terrorism at work. There is an area of every major city where 'regular folks' dare not travel. Often, the police do not travel to these places either. People are afraid of these high crime areas. Since these areas are confined, we know that if we don't go there, we are okay. That's how we cope with it. When no place is safe, however, people will not go anywhere.

There are also potent psychological affects associated with terrorism. Humans, instinctively, do not like the thoughts and physical and that accompany 'being afraid.' Some people do not deal with fear well at all. Those people will require professional treatment. Their numbers will quickly increase. As people become more afraid of going out, more confinement related problems will occur. Cabin fever, followed by domestic violence, will become commonplace.

The horrific events that occurred on US soil on 9/11 initiated the mechanism of terrorism in America. The secondary and tertiary effects are still growing, so no additional acts have been necessary. Look at what has happened to America since 9/11. Our citizens have never been so split on their thoughts about critical issues; there is a complete lack of faith in the government; the effectiveness of the US military is being questioned; illegal wire taps are being used; billions of dollars of our resources are spent on new (largely ineffective/unnecessary) security measures; frightening questions about habeas corpus violations; the checks and balances system of the federal government is failing; our country makes threats, and does not follow through; and finally, the war in Iraq. Americans are told Iraq is the battle front for the war on terrorism. It throws our young men and women into harms way, and has emptied our treasure chests. Our young people die, and we continue to spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year – yet Americans see nothing but growing losses and no end in sight. Losing on the 'battlefront of the war on terrorism' is ample evidence of our leaders' inability to protect American citizens on US soil. If the people of Iraq cannot be protected in a military state, how can the people of America possibly expect to be protected?

The mechanisms of terror are formidable and enduring. 9/11 made Americans afraid, and a fearful population is easy to lead – or mislead. To disrupt the ongoing mechanisms of terror in America, Americans must unite as individuals ready to protect themselves, their families, their property and their country.By Ned Kalbfleish, author of Terror in America http://terrorinamerica.com/

A Beginner’s Guide To Medieval Weapons

I like to insert an occasional, relevent (to me) article. I think everyone should be prepared, at least in a modest way, for the coming dark times. I recently found a nice home for sale, with a seperate studio & guest house, plus a 1000 sq ft concrete bunker! I'd buy that in a minute if I won the Lotto (House=$850,000)! Not everyone can buy huge stocks of firearms and ammo. At some point even that will run out. Home made "medieval weapons" may be a necessary choice".

Technological conditions and nature of availability of raw materials form the basis of any culture's arsenal at any point of time in the history of mankind. Prehistoric human race, often better known as the Stone Age civilization were known for their intelligent usage of grinding tools, stone and shaping axes, and creating arrows and spears as weapons for survival strategies. But these implements improved over the years as the technological skills of these cultures improved.

The development of the metallic tools, implements and weapons that persisted through the Middle Ages were actually originated during the Bronze and Iron Ages and following that, these implements have dramatically altered over time. Eventually, with the appearance of gunpowder in Europe in the early 14th century most of these weapon were rendered useless and the castle too took a backseat to the extent of becoming redundant.

The castle was considered to be one of the most formidable weapons of medieval warfare while if we consider the smaller weapons, there were also a lot of lethal ones, the ones that were movable and capable of wreaking havoc and death of an opponent. Thus despite having played a key role in the deaths of many people during the Middle Ages, it is a category of its own and hence will be kept out the following discussion on medieval weaponry.

The Middle Ages witnessed the dominance of double edged swords, metal-headed spears and axes among weapons while arrows and short bows were also in vogue. A very interesting fact that is pretty well known in this regard is that the Saxons valued swords very highly to the extent of considering the value of a sword to be equivalent to the value of 120 oxen or 15 male slaves and thus according great importance and status to a man possessing a sword. Because of these weapons being simple to construct and easy to wield, throughout the Middle Ages these weapons remained popular.

In spite of the three weapons of the sword, the spear (or lance) and the battle-axe being very prevalent during the 12th century, yet the crossbow quickly gained popularity. Compounded with the rapidly rising popularity of the horse warfare that supposedly made movement easy and allowed a benefit to its martial riders who held spears and the beginning of massive siege engines, eventually these hand-held weapons helped invaders like the Normans to overpower these less technologically advanced people.

Best Family Dog Breed for Survival?

I don't currently have a dog, but I do lots of research and see what I like walking on the streets.  I have young grand-children and don't want an attack dog like a Rottweiler or a Pitt bull around them (or me).  From what I've seen and read so far, I like three breeds for an overall useful dog around a compound and is safe with children.  As a responsible pet owner, I also realize any dog needs to be properly trained.

The top three breeds for me are:
  • Australian Shepard
  • Golden Retriever
  • German Shepard
I think anyone of these three breeds would be ideal for myself as a "guard" over a small herd of pygmy goats and other barnyard critters, and would be good watchers and playmates for small children. Decisions, decisions!

Add "Survival" Apps to Your Mobile Device"

Have an iPhone, iPod, or iPad type mobile device?  There are many applications devoted to DISASTER Survival...most are FREE or cost under $2.
There are pure Survival apps like the "SAS Survival Manual", medical apps like "Red Cross First Aid" or "Web MD", edible plant apps, Emergency Radio Scanners, Nuclear and radiological apps, and "Disaster Survival".  Also many free government apps such as FEMA!  I found several new ones today and added them to my iTouch4...lots of information to digest and no internet connection needed!

Most or similar applications are also made for Android based phones or tablets.

Another mobile device which has many documents available for it, such as military manuals, government documents, and eBooks is the Amazon Kindle.

I loaded an Earthquake Alert app the day of the Mexican quake, have it set at 4.0 and 5,000 miles from my home...it goes off several times per hour!

Underground Bunkers

As a former General Contractor, I'd like to say a few words about Underground Bunkers.  Building underground is similar to, but on a much higher scale than building a house basement foundation.  Both require proper drainage and waterproofing. Underground requires waterproof membranes, sealant, and I'd suggest insulation.  Temperatures over 10 feet in the ground, in most areas of the United States,  remain about 55 F most of the year, but you'd be uncomfortable at those temps for long periods of time.

I used "Underground Wood Foundation Systems" in my solar buildings.  They were sealed and insulated with 2" Styrofoam, then covered with 6 mill poly before back filled with 24" of gravel, then excavated material, drainage pipe went around the perimeter.  These buildings were all constructed in the Rochester, NY area...real winter!

The show "Doomsday Bunkers" appears to throw the steel building into the hole and cover it with back-fill...no insulation or drainage that I've seen.  I thinks that's trouble down the road!

Alternative Weapons to Firearms

Initially it sounded like an exciting post...until I did the research.  The original premise was that not everyone owns or has access to firearms for survival scenarios.  Hunting, self-defense, etc may be difficult for city dwellers that aren't in a gang.  Then there is the waiting time, background check, the government knows where your guns are, details. But that's another story.

My first choice for alternative hunting and self defense was a crossbow or hunting bow & arrows!  Research shows that quality bows cost about the same as a firearm, arrows more than bullets!  Yes, you need to practice to be skilled, but you should do that with firearms also!

Next came bladed weapons such as knives, swords, spears, etc.  Yup, you need to practice to be skilled...in fact your life depends on it.  There are plenty of great web sites and probably several local sources in your area, for all the above.  I have added several, and will add, to my lists on my sidebar.  Lastly, while thought of as a kid's toy, a slingshot, such as a wrist rocket can be used for small game hunting...and yes that .38 ball bearing can put your eye out!

What's the point?  Non-firearms require no license to own or operate, legal hunting requires a proper license.  They are quiet and deadly...a fact that may matter in some survival situations.  Rather than being a substitute for firearms, I strongly suggest they are a valuable addition to firearms.  Don't forget extra strings, bands, ammo, arrows, tips, sharpeners, etc.  Also in addition to stocking ammo for firearms, reloading supplies are probably a great idea, as many "preppers" will agree.

Be safe and be prepared out there!

Basic Survival on a Budget

Someone Tweeted me that they want to survive, but can't even afford a gun.  I've had "72 Hr Kits" in various sizes since Y2K (yes, that was real).  Where is my stuff?  In my apartment in a go bag and fanny packs.  What happens when I am away from home?  I'd suggest at minimum, always carry a pocket knife (maximum legal blade size) and a multi-tool on you belt or in your pocketbook at all times.  These don't take up space, usually come in black nylon sheaths and are obtrusive, even in a three piece suit guys!

I like black...most of my gear is black.  My fanny pack came from Walmart on clearance.   It contains:
  • sheath knife
  • fire starter
  • small mag lite
  • small first aid kit & KI pills
  • power bars
  • compass
  • cell phone pouch
  • alcohol wipes
  • polycarbonate sporks
  • extra glasses
  • emergency whistle/match case/compass
The entire "kit" probably cost less than $35.  In my large bag I have a change of clothes, emergency radio, candles, extra pocket & sheath knives, second flashlight, extra batteries, space blanket, water bottles, etc.  Don't forget to keep any chargers for cell phone, iTouch, shaver, etc. in you bag!  Also your computer files on flash drives is also an idea.

My third small bag is a nylon fishing tackle box that I set up for a first aid kit.  I have redundant first aid supplies, an extra 3 months supply of KI tablets, knives, more power bars, first aid booklet, another flashlight, etc.  You can buy an excellent prepackaged first aid kit (Johnson & Johnson) in a poly case for $10 at Walmart...fits in the bottom of my bag!  Don't forget prescription medicines...if possible buy 90 days supply each time.

All three bags sit on the bottom shelf of my Microwave cart near the front door, ready to go.  All three weigh less than 30 pounds and are easy to carry!  Buy items on sale, and a few at a time if on a tight budget.  My total for all three kits and supplies is less than $100, and no guns!

Hope this helps...start outfitting now!

*****Important Note:  My gear is for a single person...me!

Animals and Shelters: Nuclear Disaster to Armageddon!

What is the most important thing owners can do to protect their animals in a Nuclear Disaster?
  • Plan ahead. Animal owners should make plans in advance with friends, relatives, or shelters for housing their pets in a disaster. This will be helpful for a nuclear accident or any natural disaster.
  • Animal owners should be encouraged to purchase pet carriers.
  • Owners can use regular veterinary check-ups to practice evacuation plans from their homes.
  • Owners should have copies of their pet’s health records, including rabies vaccination.
  • Owners should have their pets micro-chipped for easy identification in an emergency.
What is KI treatment and what does it do?
  • Potassium iodide (KI) is a salt of iodine. It is one of several ingredients that can be added to tale salt to make it iodized.
  • KI has also been approved by the FDA as a nonprescription drug for use as a “blocking agent” to prevent the human thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine.
  • December 10, 2001 the Food and Drug Administration issued Guidance: Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies for use of KI in humans during a radiological emergency. There is no such national guidance for use of KI in animals available.
  • KI has a wide margin of safety, however like all medications, KI can be toxic if dosed incorrectly. Documented side effects include vomiting, drooling, runny eyes, rash, collapse and death. KI should not be used in animals with a known allergy to iodine. Suggested dose guidelines are listed below.
  • KI is a medication that can be given to humans and animals.
  • KI may not provide people or animals with 100% protection against all radioactive iodine.
  • The effectiveness of KI as a thyroid blocking agent is greatest if administered before the time of exposure to radioactive iodine, but some exposure saving can be obtained by administration shortly after exposure.
Should pets be given KI for radiological emergencies?
There are no guidelines for administration of KI for pets during an emergency. However, your clients may ask you to give KI to their pets if they have received it Potassium Iodide (KI) Treatment forAnimals Following a Nuclear Disaster because of a radiological exposure. Administration of KI should be determined by you with the owner. The following information is provided to assist you with that decision. This information is provided as guidance and recommendations only.
  • KI lessens the damage to the thyroid from radioactive iodine only. KI does not protect against other harmful radioactive rays released during a nuclear disaster.
  • Radiation is most harmful to young, actively growing animals.
  • KI must be given before or within 4 hours of exposure to be effective.
  • KI is an over-the-counter medication and you may want to stock it if there is demand in your area or special order it for the owner.
  • Do not give KI to your pet if it is sensitive to iodine.
  • Consider the age of the animal. Young animals have the highest risk of health problems from radioactive iodine and radioactive iodine causes long-term potential for thyroid cancer. Therefore, if the animal is elderly there is little chance the animal will get thyroid cancer in its lifetime (one estimate for humans was about 4 years) and elderly pets may have more problems with side effects from the KI.
Note: If a pet has been left on the property during an exposure and the owner is unable to retrieve it before 4 hours then KI will not be effective. If the pet is evacuated with the owner prior to exposure to radiation, there is no need for KI. It is our recommendation that KI only be considered for the pet if the owner has received it and the pet is with the owner.
Where can veterinarians find information regarding dosing and efficacy of KI?
Journal articles on the subject include:
  • Use of radioiodine urinalysis for effective thyroid blocking in the first few hours post exposure - Health Phys 1999 Jan;76(1):11-6
  • Potassium iodate and its comparison to potassium iodide as a blocker of 131I uptake by the thyroid in rats - Health Phys 1993 Nov;65(5):545-9
    • Reference the abstracts on page 3 of this document
    • KI comes in 130 mg and 65 mg bottles. Pro-KI™ 65 mg recommends the following dosages for pets (www.aaoobfoods.com/NBC.htm):
      • Large dogs: 1.0-2.0 tablets per day
      • Medium dogs: 0.5-1.0 tablets per day
      • Cats and small dogs: 0.25-0.5 tablet per day
Where can I get further information?
    • Contact your veterinarian with questions relating to KI and your pets.
    • www.nukepills.com has information about KI pills.
    • Mississippi Board of Animal Health (1-888-722-3106; www.mbah.state.ms.us)

    Kids in A Survival Shelter

The point of this entire Blog is to provide information, not only to my grown children & grandchildren, but for other parents and grandparents who may be faced with children in a shelter situation.

Many will have to "shelter in place" , some will have elaborate, remote, well equipped bunkers....most will be somewhere in between.  Like a "snow day" it's better to have children occupied in constructive play than running amok!

Those who home school will have most of these suggested supplies on hand, budget conscious can find them at a "$1 Store" or an Education supply store such as "The Learning Castle" or online.   I'd suggest as many activities as possible that do not use electricity or batteries, unless you have an electrical source or a charger. (strongly suggested).

    • coloring books & crayons
    • board games
    • blank paper and pencils (pencil sharpener)
    • flash cards
    • books and story books appropriate for age
    • misc. art supplies like colored paper & paste, glue sticks
    • scissors
    • tape
    • pink erasers
    • unscented markers
    • ruler
    • stapler
    • kid sized furniture or bean bag chairs
    • school desk, table or a lap desk
    • etch-a-sketch

If your shelter has space and you've had the budget to plan ahead...children should have their own space or area with play equipment or structures just for them.  The main point of all this is to keep kids from panic...keeping them occupied and having a "in school" experience will help.  Depending on the disaster, it may be their future for some time.

Lets talk food.  Along with items to keep little minds busy, diet will also be important.  Stock kid's favorite foods and snacks...ones that are healthy and require minimal preparation would be best.  Power bars, fruit roll-ups, cereals (use powdered milk), trail mix, etc.  Long shelf life is important, but as every parent knows, taste is a major issue!  Don't forget a good children's vitamin supplement, and any special medications your child may require.  If never needed for a disaster, items can be rotated every so often, as required.

    "The Warning"

    The Warning

I have often Blogged about 2012, The End Times, The Apocalypse, The Return of The Feathered Serpent, The Change, Earth Shift, etc. It is something I believe in, and like to warn people about, if only to have them think about the possibility that it may happen.

Today’s Headlines include vast forest fires in Russia, floods and landslides in Pakistan, India, and China, shortages of wheat and rice in the near future, and record heat waves throughout the world are only part of the warning signs that the majority of people have ignored so far.

The ancient civilizations that existed before the last ice age, and the science created by the Aztecs, Mayans, Egyptians and other more recent civilizations have all predicted the current climate with relative mathematical precision. Star and planetary alignments in 2012 are a fact. However, to get people’s attention, perhaps a more significant warning may be necessary.

Many predictions of the last days involve a comet or asteroid. An impact by a one-mile in diameter iron/nickel rock in the ocean would perhaps get every one’s attention. A comet that appears very bright and perhaps “green” in color may also come to pass. These signs herald the end time’s folks. Pay attention.

“What can I do to prevent this?”, you may ask. Nothing, but you can prepare. You have life insurance, car insurance, etc. Why not be prepared for these calamities? As the time approaches, get out of major cities, away from any seacoast, earthquake faults, dormant volcanoes, etc. Get a “72 Hr Kit” for each person in your family. You’ve had since Y2K to do this. I’ve had one since then. Supplies will get short and more expensive as the clock strikes down. Did you try to buy batteries on December 31, 1999? There weren’t any!

I suggest that these “obvious” warnings would occur during the last quarter of 2010 and again in 2011. The degrees of disaster will increase until the winter solstice of 2012 (12-21-12).

Hello out there? Are you paying attention?

    "The Warning" and the Calendar

A few years back I made the film, "The Warning", after thinking that the dates of 10-10-10 and 11-11-11 may be significant in regards to the End Days date of 12-21-12, which signifies the end of the Myan Calendar or as some believe, the End of Time.

The other night I realized that Western Civilisation has messed with Calendars since the Mayan timeline was made.  The Gregorian Calendar and the Julian Calendar are not the same.  There is 10-13 days difference between the dates of the two calendars.

So the possibly significant date of 10-10-10 and 11-11-11  could be in a 13 day range.  Hence the Cholera outbreak in Haiti, tsunami-earthquake-volcanic eruption, massive Midwest storms, etc could fall within this range.  In effect, "The Warning" may still be valid,  Perhaps everyone should take another look!  This also applies to the Mayan end date of 12-21-12!

    Survival Gear Alert

Looking for survival or camping gear, backpacks, sleeping bags, etc.? Buyer beware...almost 100% are made in China, regardless of Brand name. I've looked at Marmot, REI, and other name brands just today!

My advice: rather than going by fancy brands & high corresponding prices... look at quality, how well it's made, & materials.

Often, a less familiar brand, purchased on line or at a discounter, can be equal to a major brand at a lower cost....and rest assured, it will still be made in China!

    Are You Paying Attention?

I wonder if anyone, besides me, has noticed it yet; the increase in active volcano’s, earthquakes, tornados, flash floods, weather changes, disasters, killings; the number of anti-depressant ads on TV and in magazines, some very grim. Have you noticed?

If you have noticed, do you think it strange or alarming that these “events” are more frequent? Have you heard about 2012, read the “Book of Revelations”, or know of the hundreds of other “End Time” prophecies in most cultures? Are you concerned of the possible connection, or will you ignore it all as mere “coincidence”?

They say ignorance is bliss, perhaps it could be death!

2012 End of World - Safest Places to Hide

    by Brian Fieldstone

Where are you going to go when the 2012 end of world doomsday, unfortunately, comes to fruition? Where will you be hiding? How are you going to determine the best places that can provide shelter for you, in the face of volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other deadly catastrophes? Have you ever thought of that? If you haven't, then by 2012 you'll most probably be dead. But don't worry! This article contains the five safe places you can go to just in case the world turns crazy and spins out of control.

The 2012 end of world doomsday is only three years away and panic has ensued in most areas worldwide. Many fear that it will be the end. If the environmental prophecies come true there are some "safe havens" that could remain intact during the havoc.

5th Safest Place on the Planet: The Himalayas

The obvious reason for this is that it is the highest location on Earth, so any threat of tsunami or volcanic activity is instantly shut down. However, there is one, itsy bitsy tiny catch: how to get there. Only the best of veteran mountain climbers have ever gotten the chance to step on top of the entire world, and many people died climbing Mount Everest, so our chances of even surviving just traveling to this survival location is very little. This could have been easily the top safest place on the planet if not for the accessibility issue.

4th Safest Place on the Planet: China

China as a nation is well high above sea level, has more than ample resources and manpower to build many survival bunkers, and isn't prone to seismic or volcanic activity. Some of China is also landlocked, which means very little chance for water-related catastrophes to occur. Of course, we're talking about 2012 end of world doomsday here, a lot of things can happen, but on a theoretical level, China is one of the safest countries to live in on Earth should it be destroyed.

3rd Safest Place on the Planet: Sierra Nevada

Europe on 2012 is a very miserable place: it will sink in water, has extensive nuclear facilities that could blow off together, and has very many volcanoes, a few with the most destructive effects ever. Sierra Nevada, a southern mountain range known for its skiing sites, is a paradise for those seeking apocalyptic safety in Europe. It has high peaks, reachable by road, and can provide for adequate shelter and materials for comfortable living amidst the catastrophes abound. Unfortunately, the higher areas are either popular ski resorts or government-owned property, and most of these lands are very expensive to acquire. But it is still a viable place to live in for those who are in Europe and is preparing for the 2012 end of world doomsday.

2nd Safest Place on the Planet: Arizona, USA

Yep, you read that right. Many people think that USA is going to be totally obliterated come December 21, 2012, but the thing is the country's position has been diagnosed collectively, not state-to-state. Arizona, in this regard, is considered the safest place in the USA for an apocalypse. Arizona contains many highlands, which will be the safest place should a pole shift occur, and add to that the fact that it's in America, a country that will be looked upon for help by other countries.

THE SAFEST PLACE ON THE PLANET: Africa

Nobody can ever question this penultimate truth. Africa has been, and is still is, the safest place on the planet. It is the most stable continent, unchanged for millions of years, and it has shifted very little compared to the other continents. Africa has the least number of fault lines and has a negligible volcano count. Though not every place in Africa is conducive for survival, all you need to find are African plains with altitudes 2,300 meters above sea level to be assured of safety.

Geographically, Africa may very well be paradise here on Earth. The biggest drawback is that Africa as a continent is immensely underdeveloped. It has poor infrastructure, has inadequate means of transportation and is home to fatal diseases such as leprosy, malaria and cholera. If someone wants to prepare Africa for the 2012 end of world events, he couldn't do so in time. Add to that the pressure of current political instability in some disputing nations; the viability of Africa becomes lower. But just as it is, if people unite to truly conquer 2012 and set aside differences and prejudices, Africa can become the very cradle of a new civilization that is destined to grow after the whole world suffers the damages of the 2012 end of world Armageddon.
